There has already been coverage of the mis-representations of wuyi teas as a diet aid, and unresolved complaints reported to the better business bureau (BBB) but now Coca-Cola gets caught with suspect claims as well?
Coca-Cola and Nestle have agreed to pay a total of $650,000 to 27 states in a settlement over weight loss claims on one of their green tea beverages.
Green tea still offers health benefits though, apparently when mushrooms are also a regular part of a woman’s diet. In at least one study, breast cancer risk was lower in Chinese women who ate mushrooms and drank green tea on a daily basis.
You may celebrate the ‘shroom, but go easy on the yerba mate when toasting your good health. An LA Times article cites studies done in South America where higher consumption of yerba mate has been associated with higher instances of cancer. I guess we’ll have to do more homework to determine how much is too much.
Finally, no reason to store your teas too long. Catechin (those health supporting goodies found in tea) levels drop as a tea leaf ages. If the tea has been sitting too long on the store shelf, you may not be getting all the bang for your $. Yet another reason to buy fresh loose leaf?
